What is PGE’s Smart Battery Pilot Program?

PGE Smart Battery Pilot Program, Portland General Electric Oregon

The Portland General Electric (PGE) Smart Battery Pilot Program gives homeowners a great opportunity to maximize their battery storage while also being compensated for supporting a more resilient electrical grid. By participating, customers can not only improve their energy independence but also contribute to a cleaner, more sustainable power system. PGE’s Smart Battery Pilot Program connects home battery systems to create a Virtual Power Plant (VPP), helping to balance electricity demand and supply during peak times while rewarding participants with financial incentives.

In this article, we will discuss how the PGE Smart Battery Pilot works, the benefits of participating, who is eligible for the program, and how to apply for the battery incentive.

How the PGE Smart Battery Pilot Works

Homeowners who participate in the Smart Battery Pilot Program allow PGE to manage their battery’s charge and discharge during Peak Time Events. These events, which typically occur 10 to 15 times per year during periods of high electricity demand, help balance the grid by utilizing stored energy when it’s most needed.

Participants remain in full control of their battery system and can opt out of any event if desired. In exchange, they earn financial incentives for the energy discharged during these events.

PGE will not request power from a participant’s battery during a power outage. According to the company, PGE keeps a close eye on weather and won’t request power from a battery if severe conditions are likely to cause outages in the area.

The Smart Battery Pilot Program is scheduled to run until July 31, 2025. PGE is working to develop a
program to transition to after the expiration of the pilot.

Benefits of Participating

  • Earn Bill Credits: Participants in PGE’s Smart Battery Pilot receive $1.70 per kilowatt-hour (kWh) discharged during Peak Time Events.
  • Flexible Contribution Levels: Choose to allocate 30%, 50%, or 80% of your battery’s capacity to the program.
  • Enhance Energy Independence: A battery backup system helps keep essential appliances running during power outages and can keep you, your family, and business safe during blackouts.
  • Support a Clean Energy Future: Contributing to the program reduces reliance on fossil fuels and helps stabilize the grid.
